Most “educational” screen time isn’t. Here’s the ed-tech that earns it.
Every learning app and site, scored 0–100 on whether it builds something — not just whether it keeps a kid busy. Plus a look at what your own school district approved.
"Educational" is the easiest label in the app store to earn and the hardest to verify. A worksheet on a screen counts. A video of someone else building counts. So does a genuinely brilliant coding tool. The label flattens all of it.
So we scored the tools instead. Every learning app and site here carries a WISE score — Wholesome, Imaginative, Safe, Enriching, 0 to 100 — for whether it builds something, not just whether it fills time. The spread is wide: some of this is the best stuff a kid can do on a screen, and some of it is busywork with a progress bar.
Three quick reads before the full list.
Hand them this one
The ed-tech that builds a real skill
These teach something that transfers off the screen — code, design, music, 3D, math you can see — and then get out of the way. They’re the professional tools, not toy versions, which is exactly why the skill sticks. High screen time here is screen time well spent.
Blender
Professional-grade 3D creation for the price of zero dollars. It’s the ultimate creative power tool, provided your kid has the patience of a saint.

Code.org
Where kids cross from consuming the screen to building what's on it — the best computer-science on-ramp going.
Desmos
A visual math playground that makes a $100 TI-84 look like a dusty relic from the 1990s.

GarageBand
The ultimate digital sandbox that turns a screen into a professional recording studio without the typical 'screen time' guilt.

Scratch
The ultimate digital sandbox where kids stop just playing games and start building them.
Feels educational. Mostly isn’t.
The stuff that gets a pass it hasn’t earned
Parents reach for these as “learning,” but they mostly deliver passive watching or gamified busywork — the lesson is thin and the pull to keep scrolling is the point. Not villains, just not the educational win they look like. Use them with eyes open, and on a timer.
YouTube
The world's video library: equal parts educational goldmine and algorithmic nightmare that will serve your kid either Khan Academy or unboxing videos.
YouTube Kids
The training-wheels version of the world's biggest video site—safer than the main app, but still a masterclass in keeping your kid glued to a screen.

Prodigy
Math-flavored Pokémon knockoff that schools love but mostly teaches kids to beg parents for premium membership.
The ones parents argue about
Assessment & drill: heavy hours, debated payoff
Adaptive-practice and digital-assessment platforms schools assign for hours a week. They’re safe with data and genuinely useful for spotting gaps — but parents and teachers question the learning payoff, the screen-time load, and how often the work drifts from what’s taught in class.
iReady
The digital equivalent of a stack of photocopied worksheets—except these ones track your kid's every click and never seem to end.

IXL
A digital drill sergeant for K-12 standards that trades creative spark for rote fluency and a high-stress scoring system.

Edgenuity
Self-paced credit-recovery coursework: it gets you to the finish line, but nobody enjoys the scenery.

See what your district approved — scored
Districts publish the ed-tech they've cleared for classrooms. We turn that list into something a parent can use: every tool WISE-scored, sorted, and explained. Here's the live example.
District of Columbia Public Schools
146 tools the district approved, curated to the ~106 a student actually learns with, each WISE-scored.
Not in DC? Tell us your district and we'll look into building one.

FAQ
Questions parents ask
What makes an app good ed-tech?
Whether it builds a real, transferable skill — not just whether it keeps a kid busy or carries an "educational" label. Our WISE score (Wholesome, Imaginative, Safe, Enriching, 0–100) rates exactly that: a tool can have spotless data practices and still be a poor use of a child’s time.
Is screen time for "learning" automatically fine?
No. Some of the heaviest screen-time tools — adaptive practice and digital assessment assigned for hours a week — show thin learning payoff and often drift from what’s taught in class. Skill-builders like coding, design, and music tools are screen time well spent. The label "educational" doesn’t settle it; the design does.
Why do tools like YouTube or i-Ready score low?
Different reasons. YouTube is mostly passive watching dressed up as learning. i-Ready is safe and useful for spotting gaps, but it drives a lot of assigned screen time with a debated payoff. Low scores aren’t "banned" — they’re "go in with eyes open."
Can I see what my own school district approved?
Yes — we build district-specific pages from the district’s public approved-tools list and WISE-score each one. DC Public Schools is the live example; request your district and we’ll look into adding it.
