Is Scholarships.com completely free to use?

Yes. The platform is free for students and families. It funds its operations by offering recruitment services to universities and displaying sponsored offers, which means you should never pay a fee to search or apply.

Does my high schooler need to give out their Social Security Number?

No. Legitimate scholarship search engines do not require a Social Security Number to create a profile or search listings. Never enter sensitive tax or identity numbers on search databases.

How do we stop our main email inbox from getting flooded?

Create a separate email address specifically for scholarship platforms and college mailing lists. This keeps promotional mailers and university recruitment drives organized in one spot away from your student's personal accounts.

Are 'no-essay' scholarships worth applying for?

They take only a few seconds to submit, but they act like high-volume raffles with thousands of entries. Use them sparingly and save the bulk of application time for local or criteria-heavy scholarships with smaller applicant pools.

Can high school freshmen or sophomores use the app?

Students as young as 13 can build a profile and browse listings, though most awards target juniors and seniors. Starting early lets younger students see what criteria and community service hours top awards look for later.

Screenwise Verdict

Scholarships.com is a workhorse database that does exactly what it says: matches students with billions of dollars in grants and tuition aid. The depth of local and niche listings makes it a useful stop for high school juniors and seniors planning their college finances.

That free database comes with a trade-off. The platform operates on a lead-generation model, meaning your teenager will receive steady emails from partner universities and advertisers. Help them create a secondary email address before making an account so their primary inbox does not get overwhelmed.

Age Fit

Best for high school juniors, seniors, and college students (ages 14 to 22). Terms require users under 18 to have parent permission.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

The platform focuses strictly on financial literacy, college funding, and grant opportunities without toxic social features or sensationalized content.

Imaginative

It is a practical directory and database tool designed for sorting and filtering listings, not an open-ended creative experience.

Safe

Content is clean, but free scholarship platforms routinely harvest student contact information for university lead generation and sponsored marketing partners.

Enriching

Provides direct access to millions of dollars in financial aid, encouraging high schoolers to take ownership of college planning and debt reduction.

Why It Might Be Great

Local filter features let high schoolers narrow down awards by state and city, where winning odds are much better than national sweepstakes.
No-essay listings give busy high school seniors a quick start on aid applications without drowning in extra writing prompts.
Comprehensive sorting helps first-generation students, specific majors, and niche talents find identity- and merit-based grants in one directory.

What to Watch For

The inbox wave: Signing up puts your student's email on lists for college recruiters, partner offers, and promotional mailers.
Sweepstakes vs. real aid: Low-effort 'no-essay' awards function like marketing lotteries; focus time on merit or local entries that require real criteria.

Conversation Starters

"Should we set up a separate email account specifically for your college application and scholarship profiles?"
"How can you spot the difference between a real organization offering grant money and a company collecting your info for marketing?"
"Which local community groups, businesses, or credit unions near us might have smaller scholarships with fewer applicants?"

Deep Dive

How to extract value without getting spammed

Free scholarship search engines are clearinghouses. They consolidate institutional aid, private family foundations, corporate sweepstakes, and local civic grants into a single searchable table. Scholarships.com has been in this space for decades, and its index remains one of the largest available.

The real strategy here is filtering out the noise. National 'click-to-apply' sweepstakes draw hundreds of thousands of entries and function as marketing funnels. The actual value sits in the state, regional, and specific major tags. When a student filters by geographic area or personal background, the applicant pool shrinks dramatically and the odds improve.

Set up a dedicated email address—something like [email protected]—before filling out the initial matching profile.

Co-sign the setup process with your high schooler. Walk through the profile configuration together, decline optional marketing opt-ins where permitted, and set up a basic spreadsheet to track submission deadlines, essay requirements, and award amounts.
