Khan Academy is the app equivalent of finding out your kid's favorite food is actually salmon and Brussels sprouts. It's shockingly good, completely free, and genuinely educational without any of the predatory nonsense that plagues most learning apps.
The catch? It's not designed to be addictive or even particularly fun. There are no cute mascots, no battle passes, no social features to keep kids coming back. It's just... learning. Which is either perfect or a dealbreaker depending on your kid.
For self-motivated students or kids who need to catch up / get ahead in specific subjects, this is absolute gold. For kids who need more gamification and dopamine hits to engage with educational content, you might need to sit with them initially to build the habit. But unlike Duolingo's guilt-tripping owl or ABCmouse's endless upsells, Khan Academy respects both your kid's brain and your wallet.
The interface hasn't been updated much since 2012 and it shows—it's functional but not sexy. That said, the content is regularly updated and comprehensive. If you can get your kid to actually use it, you've basically got a free tutor for every subject through high school.
