Solar Walk is legitimately impressive—it turns the solar system into an interactive playground that sparks genuine wonder about space. The 3D graphics hold up well even though the app launched in 2014, and the educational content is solid with real astronomical data and detailed information about celestial bodies.
The main catch is the ads. This is the free version, and while parent reviews suggest the ads aren't terrible (kids don't accidentally click them, they're clearly marked), they're still there interrupting the experience. For a learning app aimed at kids, it's a bit of a bummer that even purchasing additional content doesn't remove them.
The other limitation is that it's purely exploratory—there are no quizzes, games, or ways to test what kids have learned. That's fine if you're using it as a reference tool or for self-directed exploration, but it won't replace structured astronomy lessons.
Still, for sparking interest in space and giving kids a genuinely cool way to explore the solar system, it's hard to beat. The awards are well-deserved, and if you can tolerate the ads (or spring for a paid version), it's a solid addition to any space-loving kid's device.
