Is Sumaze! Primary completely free?

Yes. Created by the educational charity MEI, the app is entirely free with no ad banners, no microtransactions, and no hidden subscriptions.

Does my 4-year-old need to know how to read to play?

The core gameplay is visual and numerical, but level titles and new mechanics introduce short written instructions. Non-reading children will benefit from a parent reading those short prompts aloud when starting a new level set.

How difficult do the puzzles get?

While early levels focus on simple single-digit counting, later levels introduce multi-step logic requiring players to plan four or five moves in advance. It gets challenging enough that 7- and 8-year-olds (and parents) will have to stop and think.

Can Sumaze! Primary be played offline?

Yes. Once downloaded to an iPad or iPhone, all levels are fully playable without an active internet connection, making it ideal for travel or car rides.

Screenwise Verdict

Sumaze! Primary is what educational apps look like when built by math educators rather than engagement marketers. Instead of hiding basic arithmetic behind flashing lights or rapid-fire quiz timers, it treats math operations as physical mechanics inside spatial mazes.

Players move a numbered tile around a grid, passing through math gates (+1, -2, double, halving) to reach a target value and open the exit door. It builds deep visual intuition for odds, evens, doubling, and arithmetic sequences without ever feeling like a digital worksheet.

Because there are no ads, subscriptions, or dark patterns, it requires quiet focus. Younger kids might need you sitting alongside them to talk through the multi-step logic on harder levels, but as a screen-time choice, it is pure substance.

Age Fit

Designed specifically for kids ages 4 to 7 who can count to 20. Kindergarteners and 1st graders hit the sweet spot, though older kids who like spatial puzzles will still find the final levels challenging.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

Calm, structured, and focused purely on educational puzzle-solving without chaotic animations, bright flashing gimmicks, or high-stress timers.

Imaginative

Transforms abstract math concepts like parity, operations, and doubling into spatial logic mazes that require multi-step planning.

Safe

Completely free of ads, in-app purchases, tracking, and social features. Functions fully offline.

Enriching

Teaches genuine mathematical thinking and algorithmic planning rather than fast-paced rote flashcard memorization.

Why It Might Be Great

Logic over flashcards: Instead of drill-and-kill math problems, kids slide numbers through maze gates to build problem-solving skills.
Grounded in real math standards: Built by Mathematics in Education and Industry, covering parity, doubling, and pattern recognition.
Zero distraction interface: Free of microtransactions, ad banners, and pop-up rewards that clutter most kids' apps.
Low barrier to entry: Assumes no math knowledge beyond counting to 20, making it approachable for preschoolers.

What to Watch For

Difficulty spikes: Later levels in each module require multi-step forward planning that can stump a 4- or 5-year-old playing solo.
Minimal audio guidance: Non-readers will need a parent nearby to explain the text prompt when a new gate mechanic is introduced.

Conversation Starters

"When you get stuck on a puzzle level, what is your strategy for testing a new path?"
"How can you tell if a number is odd or even before you try to divide it?"
"What happens to a number when you double it twice in a row?"

Deep Dive

Why Sumaze! Primary Stands Out

Most primary school math apps fall into one of two traps: they are either gamified flashcard drills that bribe kids with virtual coins, or open-ended virtual playgrounds where the actual math is an afterthought. Sumaze! Primary bypasses both. Built by the UK non-profit Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI), it treats arithmetic and number theory as mechanical puzzle rules.

Math as a Spatial Engine

In each level, players guide a tile through a grid. To clear obstacles, the tile must pass through mathematical gates. A gate might double the tile's value, subtract three, or restrict passage to even numbers only. To succeed, kids cannot just compute the immediate next step; they have to plan three or four moves ahead to avoid locking themselves into a corner.

This structure teaches mathematical habits that standard worksheets skip:

Parity awareness: Understanding how odd and even numbers behave under addition and multiplication.
Inverse operations: Seeing how subtraction undoes addition in real time on the grid.
Algorithmic thinking: Testing hypotheses, hitting a dead end, and working backward to find the flaw in the logic.

How to Use It at Home

Because the game lacks spoken narration for concept introductions, non-readers will need you near them for the first level of a new section. Rather than giving away the path, ask questions like 'What will happen to that odd number if we step through the +1 gate?' to help them reason through the puzzle structure.
