Here's the deal: Demon Slayer is objectively gorgeous and tells a genuinely moving story about family, loss, and perseverance. The animation is some of the best in modern anime, and Tanjiro is a protagonist worth rooting for.
But—and this is a big but—it's brutally violent. We're not talking cartoon violence or even Marvel superhero stuff. This is graphic: decapitations, blood everywhere, demons eating people, dead kids on screen. The movie literally got an R rating. Common Sense Media says 17+, and they're not being overly cautious.
If you have a mature 16-17 year old who's into anime and can handle intense content, this could be a great watch together. The themes are rich, the craft is undeniable, and there's real emotional depth. But don't let the anime style fool you into thinking this is for 12-year-olds. It's not. Even if their friends are watching it (and they probably are), that doesn't make it age-appropriate.
For older teens and adults who can stomach the violence? It's genuinely excellent. For everyone else? Wait a few years.
