Into the Breach is that rare thing: a genuinely smart game that respects your kid's intelligence AND your wallet. It's basically a puzzle game disguised as a mech combat simulator—every turn is a brain-teaser where you're trying to minimize damage while setting up future moves.
The learning curve is steep, but that's a feature, not a bug. Kids who stick with it develop real problem-solving skills: spatial reasoning, consequence forecasting, resource management. And because it's turn-based, there's time to think—no twitchy reflexes or screen-staring marathons required.
The 2018 release date hasn't aged it much since the pixel art was always intentionally retro. It's still being played and recommended in 2025. The only real caveat: this isn't for every kid. If your child gets frustrated easily or needs instant gratification, they'll hate it. But for the thoughtful, strategic kid who likes a challenge? This is gold.
