We're talking about executive function (EF)—the mental skills that help us get things done, stay organized, and not lose our cool when things go sideways.
If your kid is struggling to remember their homework or can't seem to plan a three-step task without getting distracted, the right video games might actually be a tool for growth rather than a distraction.
Think of executive function as the "CEO of the brain." It’s a set of three core pillars:
- Working Memory: Holding information in your head and using it (e.g., "I need three wood planks and two stones to build this tool").
- Cognitive Flexibility: Being able to switch gears or think about something in a new way when the first plan fails.
- Inhibitory Control: Impulse control. The ability to stop yourself from doing something "right now" to achieve a better outcome later.
When a kid plays a game like Roblox, depending on the specific "experience" they’re in, they might be doing none of these—or all of them. Our goal as intentional parents is to nudge them toward the games that actually flex these muscles.
By the time kids hit middle school, the "training wheels" of parental organization start to come off. They have multiple teachers, complex projects, and social lives that require navigating "low-key" drama. If their executive function skills are weak, they drown.
The beauty of gaming is that it provides a low-stakes environment to fail. If you mess up a complex build in Minecraft, the world doesn't end, but you do have to figure out where your logic went wrong. That’s a "level up" for the brain.
These games require kids to keep multiple goals in mind at once and plan several steps ahead.
Minecraft (Ages 7+)
This is the gold standard. In Survival Mode, a kid has to think: "I want to build a house. I need wood. To get wood, I need an axe. To make an axe, I need to find iron." That is a multi-step planning sequence that mirrors real-life project management.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (Ages 10+)
The building mechanics in this game are basically an engineering degree for kids. To solve a puzzle, they have to visualize a solution, "Ultrahand" various parts together, and test the physics. If it fails, they have to use cognitive flexibility to iterate on their design.

Satisfactory (Ages 12+)
For older kids, this game is about building massive, automated factories on an alien planet. It is essentially "Logistics: The Game." It requires immense organization and the ability to manage complex systems.

Overcooked! All You Can Eat (Ages 8+)
This game is a chaotic kitchen simulator. One minute you’re chopping tomatoes, the next the floor is moving and the kitchen is on fire. You have to communicate with teammates and switch roles instantly. It’s the ultimate test of "not losing your mind when things change."

Baba Is You (Ages 10+)

Civilization VI (Ages 12+)
This is a "turn-based" strategy game. You can’t just rush in. You have to manage a budget, negotiate with neighbors, and think about how your decisions now will affect your empire 100 turns later. It’s the antithesis of the "instant gratification" found in many mobile games.

Into the Breach (Ages 10+)
It looks like a simple retro game, but it’s actually high-stakes chess with robots. The game tells you exactly what the enemy is going to do next turn. Your job is to prevent it. It requires intense focus and the ability to inhibit the urge to just "attack" without thinking.
- The EF Skill: Metacognition (thinking about your thinking).
Not all games are "brain gyms." If you want to support executive function, you should be wary of games that rely purely on dopamine loops rather than skill loops.
- Endless Runners: Games like Subway Surfers or Temple Run are fine for five minutes, but they don't require planning. They are purely reactive.
- Gacha/Loot Box Games: If the "fun" of the game is opening a mystery box to see what you got, that’s gambling mechanics, not executive function. It actually undermines impulse control.
- Mindless "Obbys" in Roblox: Many Roblox parkour courses (called "obbys") are designed to be just difficult enough to keep a kid frustrated but not actually thinking.
- Ages 5-8: Focus on "sandbox" play. Toca Life World or Minecraft (Creative Mode) allow for open-ended planning without the stress of "dying" in-game.
- Ages 9-12: Introduce "co-op" games like Overcooked! 2 or Untitled Goose Game. These require social executive function—coordinating with another human.
- Ages 13+: Complex strategy and management sims. Cities: Skylines is basically a civil engineering course disguised as a game.
The best way to turn gaming into a learning moment is to ask "meta" questions. Instead of "Are you done yet?", try:
- "What’s your plan for that build?"
- "That level looked tough—how did you have to change your strategy to beat it?"
- "I noticed you got really frustrated when you lost your items. How did you handle that?"
You're not being a "cringe" parent; you're helping them bridge the gap between the screen and their real-world brain. You're helping them realize that the persistence they use to beat a boss in Elden Ring (maybe for the older teens!) is the same persistence they need for that chemistry project.
Video games are not the enemy of focus; they are a playground for it. If we move away from the "junk food" games and toward titles that reward planning, memory, and flexibility, we stop "managing" screen time and start "curating" it.
The goal isn't to make gaming "educational" in a boring way (no one wants to play "Math Blaster" in 2026). The goal is to choose games that are inherently challenging in ways that make the brain work harder.
