Eleanor & Park is the kind of book that hits you in the chest—beautiful and brutal in equal measure. Rowell nails the swoony, desperate feeling of first love, and the way two broken kids can find each other in the wreckage of their lives is genuinely moving.

But this isn't a light read. Domestic violence isn't background noise here; it's front and center, graphic and ongoing. Eleanor's home life is a nightmare, and the book doesn't look away. Add in profanity, sexual content, and some genuinely problematic Asian stereotypes (critics have called out how Park is characterized), and you've got a book that's been challenged and banned in multiple school districts.

For the right teen—one who's emotionally mature, interested in realistic fiction, and ready to grapple with heavy themes—this can be powerful and enriching. But it's not for everyone, and it's definitely not for younger readers who might pick it up thinking it's just a cute romance. The 1980s setting might also feel distant to modern teens, though the mixtapes and comic books have a certain retro charm.

Bottom line: Save this for older high schoolers who can handle the weight.
