Screenwise Verdict

This is one of those middle grade books that actually delivers on its promise—it's fun, it's meaningful, and it gives kids a roadmap for being themselves without being obnoxious about it.

Malú is the kind of protagonist you want your kid to meet: she's creative, she's respectful (even when she's pushing back), and she's figuring out how to honor her heritage while also being her own person. The punk rock framing is genuinely fresh for this age group and opens up conversations about subcultures, DIY creativity, and what it means to express yourself.

The book doesn't shy away from real tension—Malú and her mom clash over cultural expectations, she faces a school dress code that punishes individuality, and she has to navigate mean-girl dynamics. But it handles all of this with emotional intelligence and humor. No one's a villain; everyone's just trying to figure things out.

Bonus: the zine-making and collage art throughout make this more than just a text-based experience. Kids can actually DO the things Malú does, which is the best kind of middle grade inspiration.

Age Fit

Perfect for ages 9-13, right in the middle grade sweet spot. The bicultural identity themes resonate especially with kids navigating multiple cultural worlds, but the 'finding your people' story is universal. Upper elementary and middle schoolers will connect with Malú's new-school anxiety and creative rebellion.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

88

Malú is a genuinely respectful kid who navigates conflict with emotional intelligence—she pushes boundaries but stays within reasonable limits. The book models healthy parent-child tension (mom wants her to be more 'Mexican,' Malú wants to be herself) without villainizing anyone. Friendship formation feels organic, built around shared interests rather than popularity contests. The tone is warm and age-appropriate, with humor that doesn't rely on meanness.

Imaginative

92

The zine-making and band-forming are genuinely creative outlets that kids can actually try themselves. The book includes collage art and black-and-white illustrations throughout, making it visually engaging and modeling DIY punk aesthetics. Malú's character invites readers to think about self-expression, identity construction, and what it means to blend cultures on your own terms. The punk rock framing is fresh for middle grade and encourages thinking outside typical school social hierarchies.

Safe

95

This is a middle grade book with no content warnings. Malú's rebellion is limited to dress code violations and starting a band—no violence, substance use, or mature themes. The conflict with the 'queen bee' is realistic but never cruel or traumatic. Parent reviews on Common Sense Media consistently note the positive messages and lack of concerning content. The most 'dangerous' thing here is skateboarding, which is age-appropriate risk-taking.

Enriching

90

The book tackles bicultural identity in a nuanced way—Malú isn't rejecting her Mexican heritage, she's figuring out how to own it on her terms. Readers get exposure to punk rock history, zine culture, and DIY creative movements. The story builds empathy for kids who feel like misfits and demonstrates how to advocate for yourself within systems. Strong Amazon rating (4.6) and Pura Belpré Author Honor recognition signal genuine quality and cultural authenticity. Plus, it's actually fun to read—School Library Journal specifically praised how Pérez makes sure kids will find it entertaining.

What to Watch For

Malú does get a makeover without her mom's knowledge, which could spark conversations about boundaries and trust
