Death Note is legitimately one of the best psychological thrillers in any medium, anime or otherwise. The premise is wildly creative, the execution is surgical, and the intellectual chess match between Light and L is absolutely gripping.
But let's be clear: this is dark. You're watching a teenager become a mass-murdering zealot who genuinely believes he's god. It's morally complex in the best way—it makes you think hard about justice, power, and corruption—but it's also heavy, violent, and psychologically intense. The profanity, gore, and frightening imagery are real concerns.
Common Sense Media says 14+, and I'd push that to 15+ for most kids. This isn't for middle schoolers, period. But for older teens who can handle mature content and engage with complex moral questions? This is exceptional. Just know what you're getting into—it's a masterpiece, but it's a dark one.
