This is what a video game movie should be: fun, fast-paced, doesn't take itself too seriously, and actually respects the source material. Jim Carrey is having the time of his life chewing scenery as the villain, and the buddy-cop dynamic between Sonic and Tom works better than it has any right to.
It's not going to win awards for depth or originality—the plot is paint-by-numbers and you can see every story beat coming from a mile away. But it delivers exactly what it promises: 99 minutes of entertaining chaos that won't give you a headache or make you worry about what your kids are absorbing.
The friendship themes are genuinely sweet, the action is age-appropriate, and it's one of those rare family movies where both generations can laugh at different jokes in the same scene. If your kid is into Sonic, this is a solid watch. If they're not, it's still a decent rainy day option that won't make you want to fake a work emergency.
