This is the YA mystery that launched a thousand book club discussions and got a lot of teens reading who weren't otherwise into books. It's well-crafted, genuinely suspenseful, and the characters are more than their stereotypes.
That said, it's not light reading. There's a death at the center, drug dealing, plenty of swearing, and the whole premise is about secrets dark enough to kill over. It's appropriate for the teen audience it's written for, but parents should know what they're handing their middle schooler.
The book does good work exploring how we judge people, how reputation can trap you, and how high school hierarchies are often bullshit. But it's entertainment first, life lessons second. If your teen likes mysteries and can handle mature content, this will keep them up past bedtime. Just don't hand it to your 10-year-old without reading it first.
