Mini Motorways is that rare mobile/indie game that's both genuinely fun and genuinely educational. It teaches urban planning, traffic management, and systems thinking without any of the usual gaming baggage—no ads, no purchases, no toxicity, just pure puzzle-solving.
The minimalist design is beautiful and the gameplay loop is satisfying: draw roads, watch tiny cars zoom around, frantically add motorways when things get congested, eventually watch everything collapse into gridlock, learn from your mistakes, try again. It's strategic without being stressful, challenging without being punishing.
The main caveat is that this won't work for every kid. If your child needs constant stimulation, narrative, or action, they'll bounce right off this. But for kids who like puzzles, building games, or just figuring out how systems work, this is gold. It's also one of those games parents can genuinely enjoy alongside (or instead of) their kids—the strategy depth is real.
At an IGDB rating of 82 and OpenCritic score of 81, it's critically solid. Common Sense Media confirms zero inappropriate content. This is as close to a no-brainer recommendation as puzzle games get.
