Gathering Blue is the quiet middle child of the Giver Quartet, and it deserves more credit. While it’s technically a sequel, it feels like a standalone story about a girl trying to stay human in a place that treats people like tools.
It’s not an 'action' book. It’s a 'thinker' book. If your kid liked The Giver, they’ll appreciate the shift to this more primitive, colorful, and slightly more dangerous world. It’s from 2000, but the themes of how we treat the 'flawed' among us feel more relevant than ever.
Just be ready for a 'wait, that's it?' ending—Lowry loves to leave the door open for the next book.
