Booksmart is that rare teen comedy that's both genuinely hilarious and emotionally intelligent. It's raunchy as hell—don't kid yourself about the R rating—but underneath the dick jokes and party chaos is a really lovely story about friendship, identity, and the pressure to be perfect.
The 96% critic score isn't hype: this is a well-crafted film with sharp dialogue, great performances, and something real to say about teenage anxiety. If you have an older teen (16+) who can handle R-rated content, this is actually a great watch-together option because it opens up conversations about academic pressure, FOMO, and not judging people by stereotypes.
That said, this is NOT for younger teens, no matter how mature they seem. The language alone would make a sailor blush, and there's explicit sexual content throughout. But for the right age? It's smart, funny, and has actual heart—which is more than you can say for most teen comedies.
