Kids often tolerate them because of the "dopamine loops." They want the gold stars, the gems, and the "Level Up" animations. But notice the vibe when the iPad goes away. If they’ve been doing deep, creative work in Minecraft, they might be inspired. If they’ve been grinding through digital worksheets on IXL, they’re usually just cranky and overstimulated.

Next time you’re looking at an app your kid claims is "for school," ask yourself these three questions:
