The Cable Box, Rebuilt
Google did themselves no favors with the branding here. Parents hear "YouTube" and immediately think of algorithmic slop and comment sections. In reality, YouTube TV is a direct competitor to Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, and traditional Xfinity or Spectrum cable boxes.
If your family already subscribes to on-demand streaming like Disney+ or Netflix, your kids are probably used to choosing a specific show, watching it without ads, and stopping. Live linear television operates on a totally different rhythm. Turning on Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network live means dropping into whatever is airing at 4:15 PM, complete with loud four-minute commercial breaks.
How to Set Up the Guardrails
YouTube TV supports up to six profiles per household, and the account manager can restrict specific profiles by content rating.
- The rating filter: Inside Settings > Filter, you can toggle on "Allow TV-Y, TV-Y7, TV-G, G only." This hides adult networks and mature on-demand movies from that profile.
- The catch: A child under 13 needs a supervised Google account via Family Link to have their own profile. More importantly, on a living room smart TV, switching from the restricted kid profile back to Mom or Dad's unrestricted profile takes two clicks of the remote with no PIN required.
- Customizing the Live Guide: On your main family profile, you can go into the Live Guide settings on a browser or phone and hide channels you never want to see. Unchecking Investigation Discovery, MTV, or 24-hour cable news cleans up the scrolling experience for everyone in the house.
Use the DVR Instead of the Live Feed
The best feature in YouTube TV is the unlimited Cloud DVR. When you click the "+" button on any show—say, Wild Kratts or Bluey—YouTube TV records every single airing across every channel and organizes them neatly by season and episode.
Having your kids watch from the "Library" tab rather than the "Live" tab solves two problems at once: they pick a specific show intentionally rather than channel-surfing out of boredom, and they can fast-forward right past the commercials.
