Superbad is a well-executed comedy that nailed the awkward desperation of teenage boyhood in 2007 and still holds up as funny today. The friendship at its core is real and touching—two guys terrified of losing each other but too insecure to say it until the very end.
But let's be clear: this is an R-rated teen sex comedy with severe profanity, graphic sexual discussion, and a plot that glorifies underage drinking. It's not trying to be wholesome or safe, and it succeeds wildly at being exactly what it set out to be—a raunchy, quotable, surprisingly heartfelt comedy for older teens and adults.
If your 16- or 17-year-old wants to watch it, there are worse choices—at least this one has something to say about friendship and growing up beneath all the dick jokes. Just know what you're signing up for: this is not a 'soft' R. It earns every bit of that rating.
