Let's be clear: this is a proper horror movie, not a spooky Halloween romp. Insidious delivers genuine scares through creative supernatural mythology and atmospheric dread, and it's actually pretty good at what it does. James Wan knows how to build tension.
But it's absolutely not appropriate for kids or younger teens, despite the PG-13 rating. Parents consistently report this is one of the scariest films they've seen, with intense demonic imagery, violent scenes, and relentless terror that will cause nightmares. The choking scene alone is brutal.
If you have an older teen (16+) who's genuinely interested in horror and has the emotional maturity to handle it, this could work as an introduction to serious scary movies. But know what you're signing up for—this isn't Goosebumps. For everyone else, hard pass. There are plenty of ways to explore fear and imagination without inviting this level of nightmare fuel into your home.
