Clue is the rare board game that's both a cognitive workout and genuinely fun. It teaches kids to think like scientists—form hypotheses, test them, eliminate bad theories—without feeling like homework. The murder mystery setup is campy enough (candlestick! conservatory!) that it's not scary, but just edgy enough to feel exciting.
The 8+ age recommendation is spot-on. Younger kids can play with training wheels (simplified rules, visual aids), but the sweet spot is 9-12 when they can handle the full strategic depth. And unlike games that kids outgrow, Clue has staying power—adults genuinely enjoy it, so it's not just 'playing down' to entertain the kids.
The only real watch-out is the murder theme for sensitive families. If that's a concern, Clue Junior (ages 5+) swaps homicide for 'who ate the cake?' and works great as a gateway. Otherwise, this is a solid family game that's been earning its spot in closets for 70+ years. Not flashy, not trendy, just reliably good.
