Word of Honor (Shan He Ling) was the sleeper C-drama hit of 2021, operating on a fraction of the budget of its mega-popular cousin The Untamed and making up for it with sheer charisma. Based on the danmei (boys' love) web novel Faraway Wanderers by Priest, the show follows Zhou Zishu, a former secret-police leader slowly dying from the seven nails he drove into his own body to escape service, and Wen Kexing, the flamboyant, murderous leader of Ghost Valley. They meet, clock each other's disguises immediately, adopt a Kid, and spend 36 episodes untangling a massive martial arts conspiracy.
For teens and adults who love fantasy, sword fights, and slow-burn queer romance, it is a blast. Because Chinese censorship bans explicit queer storylines on television, the writers leaned all the way into subtext—meaning the two leads spend thirty episodes staring meaningfully at each other, reciting soulmate poetry, and calling each other "bosom friends" while raising a son together. It is violent in a theatrical, wire-fu way (lots of swordplay and coughing up fake blood), completely free of sexual content, and wildly entertaining.
