The show is in development, and the author is writing it
Prime Video's Wings of Fire is an animated series based on Tui T. Sutherland's novels about the dragons of Pyrrhia. The official logline describes seven dragon tribes at war for generations over a lost treasure, a secret movement called the Talons of Peace, and five dragonets raised in a hidden cave and enlisted, against their will, to end the war. That is the plot of the first book, The Dragonet Prophecy.
Aaron Waltke is showrunner, executive producer and co-writer. He won a Daytime Emmy writing for Trollhunters, ran Wizards: Tales of Arcadia, and wrote on Star Trek: Prodigy. Sutherland co-writes and executive produces, and Marc Resteghini produces through Jack Tar Productions.
It took two tries
Netflix announced a version in 2021, with Ava DuVernay attached, and cancelled it in 2022. Amazon picked the project up in early 2024 and announced Waltke in May 2025. There is no premiere date, cast or trailer yet, so fan-made videos using the show's name are the only "footage" online.
What to do in the meantime
The Wings of Fire books are the real thing, and the graphic novels are a good on-ramp for younger or reluctant readers, though seeing the violence drawn makes them more intense, not less. For an animated dragon fix right now, The Dragon Prince has the same mix of war, politics and kids caught in the middle. The Wings of Fire guide covers the books, the Roblox game and the fandom.
