This is one of those rare picture books that nails a difficult topic without being preachy. Sophie gets angry—really, really angry—and instead of hitting or screaming or needing mom to swoop in, she storms out, climbs a tree, and lets the world settle. The book doesn't offer platitudes or quick fixes; it just shows a kid working through her feelings in a healthy way.

Bang's color work is the star here: those explosive reds and oranges literally vibrating off the page when Sophie's mad, then melting into calming greens and blues. Kids get it immediately. The text is spare and rhythmic, making it great for repeated readings (and you will read this repeatedly when your kid is in a hitting phase).

It's been around since 1999 (this 2004 edition is a reprint) and it still holds up because anger hasn't changed. Every preschooler needs this book, full stop.
