Is there a romance in this show?

Yes, but it's very subtle. Due to censorship, the romantic relationship from the original book is portrayed as an 'intense soulmate friendship.' There is no explicit content, just a lot of emotional pining.

Why is the first episode so confusing?

The show starts at the 'end' of a major event and then goes into a massive flashback that lasts for about 30 episodes. Tell your kid to just go with the flow; it all connects eventually.

Is the CGI really bad?

It can be 'cheesy' at times, especially with the monsters. It's better to think of it as a stylized stage play rather than a big-budget Marvel movie.

What is 'cultivation' in this context?

It's a common theme in Chinese fantasy where characters train their bodies and spirits to gain magical powers, fly on swords, and live longer. It’s basically 'magic school' but with more meditation and martial arts.

Screenwise Verdict

The Untamed is the ultimate gateway drug to Chinese dramas. It is a massive, emotional epic that manages to be both a supernatural thriller and a heartbreaking character study.

If your kid is ready to move past Western superhero tropes and into something with more texture and cultural depth, this is it. Just be prepared for them to make it their entire personality for a month.

Age Fit

While rated for 7+, the plot is far too complex for most second graders. It is best for 11+ viewers who can handle subtitles and a 50-hour mystery.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

78

The core of the show is built on loyalty, justice, and a deep bond between the leads. While it features betrayal and dark magic, the moral compass remains steady.

The xianxia world-building is top-tier. It uses magical musical instruments, intricate clan lore, and a unique cultivation system that feels fresh to Western audiences.

Safe

Fantasy violence and 'undead' puppets (zombies) can be creepy. No explicit content due to broadcasting standards, but the themes of death and corruption are heavy.

Enriching

What to Watch For

The first two episodes are confusing because they start in the middle of the story—tell your kid to stick with it until episode 3.
The 'stygian' puppets are essentially zombies and can be genuinely frightening for younger viewers.
It is 50 episodes long and requires subtitles, so it is a massive time and focus commitment.

Conversation Starters

"Why did the other clans turn against Wei Wuxian even when he was trying to help?"
"How do Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian show they care about each other without saying it directly?"
"Is it ever okay to use a 'bad' power for a good reason?"
"Which clan's values do you think are the most important: justice, wisdom, or strength?"

Deep Dive

The Xianxia Phenomenon

If you haven't encountered The Untamed, you’re looking at one of the most culturally significant shows of the last decade that didn't originate in Hollywood. It’s based on the novel Mo Dao Zu Shi and belongs to the xianxia genre—think high-fantasy martial arts with a heavy dose of mythology and magic.

Why it works for families

Unlike many Western teen dramas that rely on 'edginess' or explicit content for shock value, The Untamed builds its tension through character dynamics and political intrigue. Because of strict broadcasting standards, the central relationship between the two male leads is portrayed through glances, music, and shared sacrifices rather than typical romance tropes. This makes it a great pick for parents who want emotional depth without the 'too-fast' maturity of many TV-MA streaming shows.

The Subtitle Hurdle

This isn't a show you can have on in the background while folding laundry. The plot is dense, involving five major clans and a non-linear timeline. It requires active watching. For a middle-schooler, this is actually a stealth literacy win; they’ll be reading 50 hours of dialogue while keeping track of a mystery that spans nearly two decades. If they can get past the slightly 'budget' CGI in the early episodes, they'll find a story that stays with them long after the credits roll.
