Here's the deal: The Spiderwick Chronicles should have been a slam dunk. Beloved books, Disney+ budget, magical creatures, family adventure—what could go wrong? Apparently, quite a bit.
The critics were not kind (46% on Rotten Tomatoes, 5.3 on IMDb), and while audiences were more generous (74% liked it), that's still not exactly a ringing endorsement. The show seems to suffer from pacing issues, execution problems, or just general "meh" energy that keeps it from being truly engaging.
If your 9-12 year old is deep into fantasy and loved the books, they might enjoy it despite its flaws. But if you're looking for quality family viewing that everyone will actually want to watch? There are better options out there. This one's fine for a rainy afternoon when you've exhausted everything else on Disney+, but don't expect magic.
