Screenwise Verdict

This is a genuinely beautiful middle-grade novel that doesn't talk down to kids. The premise—a house with chicken legs, a girl training to guide the dead, a journey to the afterlife—is wildly imaginative and rooted in rich Slavic folklore. But what makes it special is how thoughtfully it handles loneliness, grief, and the ache of wanting connection.

It's not a light read. Death is everywhere in this story, though it's treated as natural and even necessary rather than scary or traumatic. Marinka's job is literally to help dead people move on. If your kid is ready for that conversation, this book opens the door beautifully. If they're not, it might be a bit much.

Reviewers consistently compare it to Diana Wynne Jones and Neil Gaiman, which tells you everything about the quality of the magical world-building. It's lush, strange, and captivating. The 4.6 Amazon rating and educator recommendations back up that this is a book kids actually want to read, not just one adults think they should read.

Perfect for thoughtful 9-12 year olds who are ready to grapple with bigger emotions and love a good magical adventure. Skip it if your kid needs lighter fare or isn't ready to think about mortality yet.

Age Fit

Best for ages 9-13 who are ready for emotionally complex stories about death, grief, and loneliness. The magical elements and folklore make it accessible, but the themes require some emotional maturity. Strong readers as young as 8 could handle it, and it's meaty enough that 13-year-olds won't feel it's too young.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

88

A deeply emotional story about loneliness, friendship, and family that handles grief and death with thoughtfulness and care. Marinka's longing for connection is relatable and her relationship with her grandmother is warm. The story models perseverance, loyalty, and courage without being preachy. Themes of loss and bereavement are age-appropriate for middle-grade readers and treated with sensitivity rather than trauma.

Imaginative

94

Absolutely bursts with creativity. A house with chicken legs that walks around the world, a grandmother who guides the dead to the afterlife, journeys to the land of the dead—all rooted in Slavic folklore (Baba Yaga mythology) but reimagined for contemporary readers. Multiple reviews compare it to Diana Wynne Jones and Neil Gaiman for its magical, lush world-building. The premise alone invites wonder and the execution delivers.

Safe

82

The central themes involve death and the afterlife, which are handled thoughtfully but are present throughout. Marinka's job training involves guiding dead souls, and her grandmother disappears mysteriously. The book deals with grief and stages of bereavement. These aren't graphic or traumatic, but they're core to the story. For the target age (roughly 9-12), this is appropriate and even valuable, but younger or more sensitive readers might find the death themes heavy. No violence, gore, or inappropriate content—just emotionally weighty subject matter.

Enriching

90

Tackles meaningful themes like loneliness, stages of grief, found family, and the importance of human connection. Introduces readers to Slavic folklore and mythology in an accessible way. Multiple reviews highlight its thoughtfulness and depth. The story provides opportunities to discuss death, loss, friendship, and what it means to forge your own path versus following family expectations. Emotionally intelligent and genuinely moving without being didactic.
