The Christmas Chronicles is a genuinely entertaining modern Christmas movie that doesn't feel like it was focus-grouped to death. Kurt Russell brings actual personality to Santa instead of just 'ho ho ho,' and the adventure plot moves fast enough that kids won't get bored.
The deceased father storyline gives it more emotional weight than your average holiday romp—this is both good (real feelings! character growth!) and something to prep for if your kid is sensitive to loss themes. It's woven throughout rather than being a surprise gut-punch, and ultimately drives a sweet message about family healing.
This isn't going to become a timeless classic that your grandkids watch, but for 2018 it holds up well in 2025. The effects are decent, the humor lands, and it doesn't talk down to kids. It's the kind of movie that works for family movie night when you need something everyone from 6 to 46 can tolerate—and might actually enjoy. The WISE score reflects solid family entertainment that checks the boxes without being revolutionary.
