The Book of Dust (specifically La Belle Sauvage) is a masterpiece, but don't let the 'children's book' label fool you. It’s a sophisticated thriller that deals with some pretty grim realities.

If your kid is a strong reader who loved His Dark Materials, they’ll be fine, but maybe wait until they're at least 12 or 13 before handing this one over. It’s not just 'fantasy'—it’s a deep dive into politics, religion, and human nature that will actually give them something to think about.

Ignore the 1998 date in the metadata; this series really kicked off in 2017 and feels entirely modern and relevant.

Age Fit

This is perfect for 12 to 14-year-olds who have already graduated from Harry Potter and want something with more 'meat' on the bones. It's technically a prequel, but it's much darker and more complex than the first book of the original series.
