Spirit Island is a masterpiece of modern board gaming. It’s the perfect antidote to 'brain rot' because it demands total engagement and high-level problem solving.
It isn't for everyone—if your kid gets frustrated by complex rules or long wait times, steer clear. But if you have a kid who loves strategy, fantasy, or environmental themes, this is a must-own. It treats the players like they're smart, and it treats the subject of colonialism with more nuance than a history textbook.
While the box says 13+, a sharp 11 or 12-year-old who has played games like Catan or Pandemic can handle it with help. It's a '99' on the high end because many adults consider this the best game in their collection.
It is a purely cooperative experience where players must work together to protect their home. The tone is serious but respectful, focusing on the preservation of nature and indigenous culture rather than mindless conquest.
