If you are looking for a gritty, well-acted binge that does not pull punches on the ugliness of modern warfare, this is it. Zoe Saldaña is excellent as a handler trying to keep her soul intact while her operatives risk theirs in the field.

It is not for kids, and it is not 'wholesome' by any stretch of the imagination. It is a Taylor Sheridan production, which means it is loud, violent, and deeply cynical about how the world actually works. For parents, it is a great 'after the kids are in bed' watch, but do not let the 'Marine' branding fool you into thinking it is a family-friendly military show.

With Special Ops: Lioness, he moves away from the neo-Western ranches of Yellowstone and into the 'War on Terror' space previously occupied by shows like Homeland or Jack Ryan. The difference here is the focus on the Lioness program—a real-life military concept where female Marines were used to engage with local women in Iraq and Afghanistan. Sheridan takes that premise and turns it into a high-stakes espionage thriller.

The show is at its best when it focuses on the friction between the bureaucracy of the CIA (represented by a very stoic Nicole Kidman) and the raw, traumatic reality of the field (represented by Laysla De Oliveira’s Cruz Manuelos). It is a show about the machine of war and how it grinds up the people inside it.

Critics have been split, with some calling it 'nonsense,' but the audience response has been much warmer. It is 'competence porn' at its finest—watching highly trained people do dangerous things very well.
