Sluggers is a perfectly competent middle-grade series that hits all the right notes—family, mystery, history, sports—but it's fighting an uphill battle against time. Published in 2009 and set in 1899, it's doubly removed from modern kid culture.
The bones are good: three well-developed siblings, a magical baseball MacGuffin, a greedy villain, and a cross-country adventure. Parents clearly liked it (that 5-star Amazon rating). But in 2025, getting a kid to pick up a book about turn-of-century traveling baseball teams is like asking them to get excited about rotary phones.
If your kid already loves baseball or devours historical fiction, this could be a hit. For everyone else, there are more engaging options that don't require explaining what life was like before cars were common.
