If you missed Steve Carell playing a slightly pathologically well-meaning protagonist, Rooster delivers that exact energy in a college faculty lounge. As Greg Russo, a famous author who moves into his adult daughter's professional sphere, Carell grounds what could easily be a cartoonish premise in actual affection and real parental anxiety.
That said, don't throw this on for family TV night with middle schoolers expecting The Office. Co-creators Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses lean into HBO's TV-MA freedom right away with male nudity, constant swearing, and explicit adult humor. It is a show about adults figuring out adult relationships, not a cozy family comedy.
For parents watching solo or putting something on with an older high schooler or college kid at home, Rooster hits a sweet spot: genuinely funny, sharp on higher-ed absurdities, and surprisingly sweet about the complicated transition into relating to your kids as peers.
