If your kid thinks the Pokémon anime is too 'babyish' but they still live and breathe the games, this is the gold standard. It’s the version of the story the creator of Pokémon actually wanted to tell.
It’s fast-paced, cleverly written, and doesn't talk down to its audience. While it has some 90s manga 'grit'—meaning Pokémon can get pretty banged up in fights—it’s fundamentally a story about growth and the bond between humans and nature. It’s a must-read for any fan of the series.
Best for ages 7 to 14. It’s sophisticated enough that even teenagers and 'nostalgic' adults enjoy it, but the core reading level is perfect for 2nd through 6th graders.
Strong themes of friendship and responsibility toward animals, though it's noticeably more 'edgy' than the sunshine-and-rainbows anime. Characters face real consequences and grow through hardship.
