This is one of those books that reminds you why middle-grade literature matters. Schmidt doesn't talk down to his audience—he trusts readers to handle Doug's abusive father, his brother's PTSD, and the grinding reality of poverty without flinching or preaching.
The Audubon paintings are genius—they give Doug (and readers) a window into beauty and possibility that feels earned, not contrived. And Lil is the kind of love interest we need more of: smart, funny, with her own life and agency.
That said, this isn't a book for everyone. The abuse scenes are legitimately upsetting, and the emotional weight is real. If your kid is sensitive or young for their age, wait. But for mature middle schoolers who can handle complexity? This is the good stuff—the kind of book that builds empathy and sticks with you. Just maybe read it yourself first so you can talk through the hard parts together.
