Most martial arts fantasy dramas are about an underdog training to become number one in the world. Mysterious Lotus Casebook starts ten years after the main character already did that, watched his whole life blow up because of his ego, and decided to fake his death and live in a two-story wooden RV with his dog. It is a smart, funny, deeply likable twist on the genre.
Instead of mopey romance, you get a solid buddy comedy bolted onto a classic detective procedural. Li Lian Hua wants to be left alone, yet he keeps stumbling into bizarre murders alongside an idealistic rookie detective and an old rival who refuses to let him retire in peace. At 40 episodes, it is a hefty time commitment, and the subtitle speed during the mystery explanations will test a slow reader. For a tween or teen who likes Sherlock, anime, or historical fantasy, it is a fantastic co-watch.
