This is exactly what a graphic novel should be. It’s fast-paced, visually stunning, and actually has something to say about friendship and courage.

Ben Hatke doesn't talk down to kids. He treats their adventures with the same gravity an adult might give a prestige drama, which is why kids gravitate toward his stuff. It’s not 'brain rot'—it’s high-quality storytelling that happens to have laser-shooting robots and magical gardens.

If your kid is stuck in a 'I only read Dog Man' phase, this is the perfect bridge to more complex narrative structures without losing the fun.

Age Fit

Perfect for the 8-12 crowd. Younger kids (6-7) who are strong visual readers will love it too, provided they don't mind a few toothy monsters.

Ben Hatke is the king of 'heartfelt adventure.' The story prioritizes loyalty, sibling bonds, and the idea that being a hero is about showing up for your friends, not just hitting things.

Imaginative

It's a masterclass in world-building. Merging a fantasy 'giant-slayer' world with a retro-future 'space-explorer' world sounds messy, but Hatke makes it feel like they were always meant to coexist.

Safe

It's a graphic novel, so the 'violence' is stylized and static. There are some creepy monsters (screeds) and tense moments of peril, but nothing that will keep a 9-year-old up at night.

Enriching

Excellent for visual literacy. The character Lilly provides a great window into neurodiversity and non-verbal communication without being 'after-school special' about it.

Why It Might Be Great

Ben Hatke's art is gorgeous and incredibly easy to follow, even when the action gets chaotic.
It rewards fans of the previous books but has enough momentum to carry a newcomer through the plot.
Lilly and Zita are fantastic, capable female leads who don't fall into tired tropes.
The themes of sacrifice and teamwork are handled with real emotional weight.

What to Watch For

The 'Screeds' and some of the giants might be a bit much for sensitive 6-year-olds who aren't used to monster designs.
If they haven't read the previous books, they'll be asking you 'Wait, who is that?' every five minutes for the first chapter.
