Let's be honest: the original Madden NFL is a relic. It's historically important—it launched one of gaming's biggest franchises—but as something to actually play in 2025? Hard pass.
The 1988 version is incredibly primitive: basic play-calling, blocky players that barely resemble humans, and gameplay that feels like moving chess pieces rather than experiencing football. There's no franchise mode, no team customization, no real strategy beyond "pick a play and hope."
It's perfectly safe and wholesome, sure, but that's because there's barely anything there. Modern Madden games (or other sports titles) offer exponentially more entertainment, education about football strategy, and actual replay value.
If you want your kid to learn football through gaming, grab literally any Madden from the last decade. If you want them to appreciate how far technology has come, this makes a decent 10-minute history lesson before they inevitably ask to play something else.
