Screenwise Verdict

This isn't the book your kid is going to beg for every night at bedtime, but it’s the one you’ll be glad you read together. It successfully ditches the 'stranger danger' fear-mongering of the past and replaces it with actual agency and confidence.

It’s practical, modern, and does the heavy lifting for you on topics that usually make parents stammer. Every home library should have a copy of this—it's basically a prerequisite for being a person in the world.

Age Fit

Perfect for the 4–9 crowd. It's simple enough for preschoolers to grasp the basics of 'my body belongs to me,' while still being relevant for elementary kids navigating playground dynamics.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

It models healthy relationships and mutual respect. The tone is empowering and grounded, focusing on kindness and the right to personal space without being preachy.

Imaginative

As a non-fiction educational tool, it isn't building new worlds, but it does use scenarios to help kids mentally rehearse social situations and 'what-if' moments.

Safe

100

The entire purpose of the book is safety. It contains no triggers or inappropriate content; it is a clinical yet warm guide for body autonomy.

Enriching

This is top-tier enrichment. It provides children with a functional vocabulary for consent and boundaries that many adults still lack. It builds high-level social-emotional intelligence.

Why It Might Be Great

Gives kids actual words to use when they feel uncomfortable or crowded.
Normalizes the idea that 'no' is a complete sentence, even for toddlers.
Uses relatable, everyday scenarios like tickling or hugging instead of scary, abstract concepts.
Includes a built-in guide for parents who are nervous about starting these conversations.

⚠

What to Watch For

It’s a teaching tool, not a 'story,' so don't expect a thrilling plot or a page-turner.
It deals with bullying and body safety, which might make very sensitive kids a little anxious if not framed as 'you are in charge.'

Conversation Starters

"What’s a way you like to say hello to people that isn't a hug?"
"If someone keeps tickling you after you say 'stop,' what should you do next?"
"How can you tell if a friend is actually having fun or if they want to stop playing?"
"Who are three 'safe adults' you would talk to if someone made you feel weird?"
