Screenwise Verdict

Google News is a competent news aggregator for adults, but it's a terrible choice for kids and even questionable for teens. Parents have been begging for parental controls and age-appropriate filtering since at least 2022, and Google hasn't delivered.

The core problem: news is inherently adult content. You can't aggregate headlines without surfacing stories about murder, war, sexual assault, political dysfunction, and disasters. The app makes no attempt to soften this or provide context. Common Sense Education straight-up says younger students need guidance because it's 'geared toward adults' with stories of 'dubious news-worthiness.'

For high schoolers doing civics or current events coursework, there's some value in learning to navigate real news sources—but honestly, curated teen news sites (like The New York Times' 'The Learning Network' or BBC Newsround) are better starting points.

The WISE score is low because this isn't designed for kids, doesn't pretend to be, and actively creates an unwholesome information environment even for adults (doom-scrolling, anyone?). If your teen needs news access, set it up together with explicit conversations about media literacy, and check in regularly about what they're seeing and how it's affecting them.

Age Fit

This is an adult news app, full stop. High schoolers (16+) who are actively learning media literacy and need to engage with current events might use it with guidance, but even then, there are better curated news sources for teens. Absolutely not appropriate for middle schoolers or younger—they'll be hit with unfiltered adult content.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

35

News aggregators expose users to the full spectrum of current events—violent crime, political conflict, disasters, and disturbing imagery—without meaningful content filtering. While staying informed is important, the constant stream of negative headlines and graphic stories creates an emotionally unhealthy environment, especially for younger users. The app's algorithm prioritizes engagement, which often means surfacing sensational or anxiety-inducing content.

Imaginative

20

News aggregation is fundamentally passive consumption. There's no creative expression, no building, no exploration beyond clicking through articles. The personalization algorithm actually narrows perspective by creating filter bubbles rather than encouraging curiosity or diverse thinking. It's purely informational delivery with zero imaginative component.

Safe

25

Major safety concerns for kids: no parental controls (per 2022 parent complaints), no content filtering for age-appropriateness, and frequent exposure to disturbing imagery in thumbnails and headlines. Parents specifically requested a 'Google Kids News' because the current app serves adult-oriented stories with 'dubious news-worthiness' (Common Sense Education). Kids Mode exists but doesn't filter news content. The app will surface stories about violence, death, sexual assault, and other mature topics without warning.

Enriching

55

Being informed about current events has real value for media literacy and civic engagement. The Full Coverage feature showing multiple perspectives is genuinely useful for critical thinking. However, the personalization algorithm creates echo chambers rather than broadening horizons. For teens learning to engage with news critically, there's educational value, but the app doesn't scaffold that learning—it just dumps raw news feeds.

What to Watch For

Zero content filtering—kids will see headlines and images about violence, death, disasters, and sexual content
No parental controls despite parent requests dating back years
Personalization algorithm creates filter bubbles and can amplify anxiety-inducing content
Common Sense Education explicitly warns it's 'geared toward adults' and younger students need heavy guidance
The constant negativity bias of news (violence, conflict, crisis) is mentally exhausting even for adults

Conversation Starters

"What stories are showing up in your feed today? Do you think the app is showing you what's actually important, or what will keep you clicking?"
"How do you feel after reading the news for 10 minutes? Informed? Anxious? Overwhelmed?"
"When you see a headline that sounds crazy or scary, what's your process for figuring out if it's accurate or sensationalized?"
"Should news apps show different content to kids vs. adults, or is that censorship?"
