Deep Dive

A Sherlock Holmes for the middle-grade bookshelf

If your kid likes clever leads who outsmart every adult in the room, Friday Barnes delivers immediately. The premise kicks off when eleven-year-old Friday reads her uncle's detective manuals, solves a major bank robbery, and uses the reward money to enroll herself in an elite boarding school. Highcrest Academy turns out to be riddled with petty crimes, school rivalries, and bizarre urban legends, giving Friday an endless supply of cases.

Fast pacing and dry humor

What makes the book click is Friday's completely pragmatic personality. She does not care about popularity, fashion, or social hierarchies, which makes her commentary on boarding school culture genuinely funny. Author R.A. Spratt leans into British-style deadpan comedy that feels fresh alongside more slapstick-heavy middle-grade series.

"She was an incredible girl. Not because she was pretty, or popular, or athletic. Friday was remarkable because she was completely ignored." — Friday Barnes, Girl Detective

Great fit for confident readers and audio fans

The text includes elevated vocabulary and witty banter that keeps proficient readers on their toes. If your reader prefers listening, the audiobook narrator captures Friday's dry tone remarkably well, making it a great pick for road trips or screen-free listening sessions.
