Can my child still download the standalone Flipgrid app?

No. Microsoft retired the standalone Flipgrid (Flip) app and website on September 30, 2024. The video discussion features now live inside Microsoft Teams for Education.

Is Flipgrid safe for young kids?

Yes. When used within a school environment, video discussions occur inside closed groups protected by school logins and teacher moderation. There is no open public feed or direct messaging with strangers.

Can people outside my child's class see their videos?

No. Grids and video prompts require specific join codes or school-domain logins. Videos are not searchable on Google or accessible to the public.

What should I do if my child gets anxious about recording video responses?

Flipgrid tools allow students to cover the camera with a screen card, use audio-only recording modes, or add stickers over their face if camera anxiety is an issue. You can also ask the teacher about alternative submission options.

Screenwise Verdict

If you are looking for Flipgrid on the App Store or Google Play, you will not find it—Microsoft officially retired the standalone Flipgrid (later called Flip) app in late 2024. Its signature feature, where teachers post a prompt and students record short video responses, now exists exclusively inside Microsoft Teams for Education.

During its decade-long run as a dedicated tool, Flipgrid was a standout example of educational technology done right. It gave quiet students three takes to articulate their ideas on video, kept interactions walled off from the broader internet, and gave teachers total moderation control.

Age Fit

Designed for K–12 students (ages 5 to 18) using school-managed Microsoft Teams accounts.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

Classroom-focused video discussions center on school assignments, peer collaboration, and structured teacher prompts in private groups.

Imaginative

Offers creative tools like stickers, filters, and short-form video editing to express ideas visually and verbally.

Safe

Closed educational environment with teacher moderation, private join codes, and zero open social feeds or public messaging.

Enriching

Builds public speaking skills, active listening, and verbal articulation for kids who struggle with written responses.

Why It Might Be Great

Classroom video responses gave shy students a low-stakes platform to practice speaking without standing in front of a room.
Teacher-controlled spaces kept video discussions strictly inside private school groups accessible only via join codes.
Built-in expressive tools let kids add text overlays, stickers, and simple edits to show their creative thinking.

What to Watch For

The standalone app is gone: Microsoft retired the separate Flipgrid/Flip app in September 2024 and merged the functionality into Microsoft Teams for Education.
Screen anxiety: Recording video responses on camera can still trigger performance nerves for some kids, even inside closed classroom groups.

Conversation Starters

"Does your teacher have you record short video replies for homework assignments?"
"Is it easier for you to explain an answer out loud on video or type it out in a paragraph?"
"How do you feel when your classmates watch the videos you record for class?"

Deep Dive

From Standalone App to Integrated Teams Feature

For years, Flipgrid was the standard tool for teachers who wanted students to practice verbal expression. Instead of standing in front of the whiteboard or turning in a typed worksheet, kids tapped record on a short video clip, customized it with a few stickers, and submitted it to a locked grid seen only by their teacher and classmates.

What happened to Flipgrid?

In September 2024, Microsoft retired the standalone web and mobile applications. The core video discussion feature set was folded directly into Microsoft Teams for Education. If your child's school uses Teams, teachers can still assign video prompts through the platform. If the school does not use Teams, the tool is no longer available to them.

Why it worked well for learning

Unlike consumer platforms like TikTok or YouTube, Flipgrid operated in a secure environment. Teachers had to approve videos before they appeared to classmates, text comments could be turned off entirely, and access required a school login or specific class code. For kids who froze during live classroom presentations, having a quiet space at home to record and re-record a response built real communication skills without open-web risks.
