This is a gorgeous, heavy-hitting limited series designed from the ground up for mature audiences. Zoe Kazan's take on her grandfather Elia Kazan's territory expands beyond the 1955 James Dean film, digging into the full generational sweep of Steinbeck's Salinas Valley epic.
It works because it refuses to sand down the book's ugly edges. Florence Pugh is terrifyingly magnetic as Cathy Ames, turning a character who could have been a cartoonish villain into a fascinating study of pure self-preservation and cold malice.
