Chef is that frustrating movie that's almost perfect for family viewing. The story is genuinely wonderful—a dad reconnecting with his son while chasing his culinary dreams via food truck across America. The themes are excellent: creativity, entrepreneurship, family, second chances. The food looks incredible. Jon Favreau clearly made something personal and heartfelt here.
But then there's the language. So. Much. Swearing. It's a kitchen environment, and apparently that means F-bombs every few minutes. The R rating is entirely for profanity, which is both the least harmful reason for an R rating and the most annoying for parents who'd otherwise love to show this to their kids.
For teens 15+ or adults? It's a lovely, feel-good watch. For younger kids? Nope. Save it for when they're older, or watch it yourself and enjoy the food porn and warm fuzzies. Reddit parents argue it's a "good family film despite the R rating," but that only works if your family is cool with that level of language. Know your audience.
