Beyonders is exactly what you want in a middle-grade fantasy series: it’s smart, it’s immersive, and it treats the reader like they can handle a bit of darkness.
It’s a massive step up from 'brain rot' entertainment. If your kid is into D&D or epic quests, this is a slam dunk. It’s not 'old' enough to feel dated, and the writing holds up against anything published in the last few years.
Perfect for the 10-14 bracket. Younger kids might struggle with the length and some of the darker, more hopeless themes in the first half of the series.
The core of the story is about two kids choosing to be heroes in a world that has essentially given up. It models sacrifice and friendship without being preachy or overly saccharine.
Brandon Mull is a heavyweight in world-building. Lyrian isn't just a generic Middle-earth clone; it has unique lore, a clever magic system based on a 'Word,' and creatures that feel fresh.
It's a book, so no tech risks. Content-wise, it's safe for the 10+ crowd, though the violence is more 'real' than a cartoon. People actually get hurt and the stakes have teeth.
It tackles the ethics of rebellion and the weight of responsibility. It asks kids to think about what they would do if the 'good guys' had already lost.
