This is the real deal—a National Book Award Finalist that earns its accolades. Ibi Zoboi created something genuinely literary that doesn't talk down to teens while tackling immigration, identity, and impossible moral choices.

Yes, there's profanity. Yes, there's drug dealing and violence. But it's not gratuitous—it's the world Fabiola lands in when her mother is detained and she's sent to live with cousins in Detroit. The magical realism elements rooted in Haitian vodou culture make this stand out from typical contemporary YA.

This isn't a light read or an easy one. It's for older teens (13+, really more like 14-15+) who can handle mature content and moral ambiguity. But for the right reader, this is the kind of book that sticks with you—the kind that builds real empathy and understanding for experiences outside your own.

If your teen is ready for serious literature that doesn't sugarcoat the immigrant experience or the cost of the American dream, this is excellent. Just know what you're getting into content-wise.
