Screenwise Verdict

Look, Tupac's story deserves to be told—he was a generational talent who spoke truth about systemic injustice and left an indelible mark on hip-hop. But this ain't it.

The film is loaded with R-rated content: graphic violence (including a child getting shot), sexual content, pervasive profanity, and constant drug use. That's expected for an authentic portrayal of Tupac's life. The problem? Critics universally panned it as boring and poorly executed. A 17% Rotten Tomatoes score and 38 Metacritic aren't just bad—they're 'barely watchable' territory.

If you want your older teen to understand Tupac's cultural impact, find a good documentary instead. This biopic manages to make one of hip-hop's most dynamic figures feel flat. It's too violent and mature for anyone under 17, and too mediocre for anyone who'd actually appreciate the subject matter.

Age Fit

This is rated R and Common Sense Media recommends 17+. Even then, it's a tough sell—the film is critically panned as bland and disappointing, making it a poor entry point for learning about Tupac. Adults interested in his story would be better served by documentaries.

WISE Breakdown

Wholesome

Heavy violence including shootings, stabbings, and a child accidentally shot; sexual abuse conviction storyline; pervasive drug use and profanity throughout. While it attempts to tell Tupac's story authentically, the tone is dark and the content is consistently mature with little emotional uplift.

Imaginative

Biopic format offers some insight into Tupac's creative process as a rapper, poet, and activist, but critics universally pan the execution as 'bland' and 'disappointing' with a 17% Rotten Tomatoes critic score. The film doesn't inspire creativity or exploration—it's a paint-by-numbers biopic that fails to capture the imagination of its subject.

Safe

Multiple serious safety concerns: graphic violence (shootings, stabbings, bloody wounds), sexual content and nudity, pervasive strong language, drug use throughout, and a storyline involving sexual abuse charges. Kids-in-Mind rates violence at 7/10 and profanity at 10/10. This is R-rated content with no guardrails.

Enriching

There's potential educational value in learning about Tupac's impact on hip-hop culture and his activism, but Plugged In describes it as 'barely watchable and rarely edifying.' The poor execution (38 Metacritic, 2.7/5 Letterboxd) undermines any enrichment value. You'd learn more from a good documentary or reading about Tupac than sitting through this.
