This is one of those rare picture books that does everything right. It takes a familiar nursery rhyme and turns it into a genuinely moving story about trauma and recovery—without being heavy-handed or preachy. The illustrations are stunning, the pacing is perfect, and the twist ending is both surprising and satisfying.
What makes it exceptional is how it handles fear and anxiety. Humpty doesn't just 'get over it'—he struggles, he adapts, and eventually he finds the courage to face what scares him. That's a lesson every kid (and adult) needs. The Caldecott Medal and stack of awards are well-deserved.
If you're looking for a book to help a kid through a tough transition, a setback, or just general anxiety about trying new things, this is it. And even if you're not, it's just a really good story. One of the best picture books of the last decade.
