TL;DR: DragonBox Algebra 5+ and DragonBox Algebra 12+ are arguably the best math apps ever made, but they are so good at "hiding" the math that kids often don't realize they’re solving equations. To move those skills to paper, you need to "unmask" the dragon. Use a "Translation Key" to turn monsters into variables, practice side-by-side with a whiteboard, and narrate the "rules of the world" as algebraic properties.
If you haven't seen it yet, DragonBox Algebra is a series of apps that teaches the fundamental rules of algebra through a puzzle game. Instead of $x + 2 = 4$, kids see a little dragon in a box, some colorful monsters, and "night cards."
The goal is always to get the Dragon (the variable) alone on one side of the screen. To do it, they have to follow the rules of the game—which are actually the rules of algebra. For example, if you add a "night card" to one side, you have to add it to the other. If you stack two identical cards, they disappear (cancel out).
It’s brilliant because it builds conceptual intuition before kids ever see a "plus" sign. But because the game is so immersive, kids can sometimes get "stuck" in the game world. They become experts at "isolating the dragon" but look at a worksheet with $2x + 5 = 11$ like it’s written in ancient Greek.
The "transfer" problem is real. In educational psychology, this is called the "encoding specificity principle." Basically, your brain learns a skill in a specific context (a glowing iPad screen with cute monsters) and struggles to retrieve that skill in a different context (a black-and-white worksheet at a wooden desk).
In DragonBox, the "math" is handled by the game's physics. The kid doesn't have to remember to subtract 5 from both sides; the game simply won't let them progress unless they balance the equation. On paper, there are no guardrails.
The most effective way to start the transition is to play the game with them and start changing the vocabulary.
Stop calling it "The Dragon." Start calling it "$x$." Stop calling them "monsters." Start calling them "constants" or "values." When they click the "vortex" to simplify things, call it "combining like terms."
Try this: Once they've cleared a few levels in DragonBox Algebra 5+, sit down and create a physical "Translation Key" on a piece of paper.

Don't jump straight to a 50-question worksheet. That’s the fastest way to make them hate the math they just learned to love. Instead, use a small whiteboard.
- Mirror the Level: Pick a mid-level puzzle in the app.
- Draw the "Game" version: On the left side of the whiteboard, draw the monsters and the dragon box exactly as they appear on the screen.
- Write the "Math" version: On the right side, write the actual algebraic equation that matches the screen.
- Solve simultaneously: Have them make one move in the app, then immediately perform the corresponding step on the whiteboard with the numbers.
This visual bridge is the "Aha!" moment. It shows them that the pencil isn't doing something new; it’s just a different way of "playing" the game.
Kids often play DragonBox in a flow state, clicking and dragging without much conscious thought. To move to paper, they need to verbalize the logic.
Ask them: "What's the rule of this world?" They might say: "Whatever I do to the left side, I have to do to the right side or the dragon gets mad." You say: "Exactly. In math, we call that the Equality Property. Let's do that on this paper. If we subtract 2 here, what do we have to do over there?"
By turning the "game rules" into "math rules," you're giving them a mental script they can use when they're sitting in a quiet classroom without an iPad.

Before algebra, there is number sense. This app uses "Nooms" to show kids how numbers can be stacked, sliced, and combined. It’s the best way to explain addition and subtraction without using a single flashcard.
Mathigon (Ages 10+)
Often called the "Textbook of the Future," this is a free website that is incredibly interactive. It uses "Polypads" (virtual manipulatives) that feel very similar to the DragonBox mechanics but uses more traditional mathematical notation. It's the perfect "middle step" between a game and a textbook.
Prodigy Math (Ages 6-12)
While DragonBox is about deep conceptual understanding, Prodigy is about volume and practice. It’s a Pokémon-style RPG where battles are won by solving curriculum-aligned math problems. It’s great for building the "paper math" stamina once they understand the concepts.
Zearn (Ages 5-11)
If your school uses Eureka Math, Zearn is likely already on your radar. It’s less "gamey" than DragonBox, but it does a fantastic job of using digital "digital manipulatives" to explain why long division or fractions work the way they do.
- Ages 5-8: Focus entirely on DragonBox Algebra 5+. Don't even worry about "transferring" to paper yet. Just let them build the intuition. If they want to draw the monsters on a piece of paper, great.
- Ages 9-12: This is the sweet spot for the "Translation Key." Most kids start formal algebra concepts around 5th or 6th grade. Use the app as a "warm-up" before they start their actual homework.
- Ages 13+: Use DragonBox Algebra 12+ as a remedial tool if they are struggling with complex equations (parentheses, variables on both sides, etc.). At this age, the "transfer" should be immediate—the app acts as a visual proof for the abstract rules they're learning in class.
The biggest trap parents fall into is thinking that "beating the game" equals "knowing the math."
You might see your kid fly through 100 levels of DragonBox and think they're ready for the SATs. But if you don't do the work of explicitly connecting the game to the symbols, the knowledge stays "siloed" in the app.
Also, watch out for "button mashing." If your child is just dragging items randomly until the screen sparkles, they aren't learning the logic. Ask them to explain why they are making a move. If they can't explain the rule, they haven't mastered the level yet.

The goal isn't to replace paper math, but to give them a mental image to reach for when they see a scary-looking equation. When they get stuck on a worksheet, you can just say: "Remember the dragon? What would you do to get him alone in his box?"
