If you haven't looked at a middle schooler's homework process lately, it looks a lot different than our days of Encyclopedia Britannica or even early Wikipedia. We are in the era of "Generative AI."
It’s no longer just about searching for an answer; it’s about an app that can generate a 500-word essay on the themes of The Great Gatsby in six seconds, or a camera app that doesn't just give the answer to a calculus problem but shows every single step to get there.
The tools fall into two main buckets:
- Large Language Models (LLMs): Like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Claude. These are the "chatty" ones.

The problem is that the line between the two is incredibly thin, and kids (with their developing prefrontal cortexes) are naturally going to gravitate toward the path of least resistance.
This app is basically magic, and that’s the problem. You point the camera at a math problem—handwritten or printed—and it solves it instantly.
- The Good: If a kid is stuck, it shows the steps. It’s like having a teacher standing over your shoulder.
- The Bad: It is way too easy to just copy the steps without engaging the brain. It’s "brain rot" for mathematics if used incorrectly.
- Verdict: Great for checking work; terrible for doing work.
The big one. It can write poems, code, and history papers.
- The Good: Incredible for brainstorming, outlining, and simplifying complex topics.
- The Bad: It "hallucinates" (it makes stuff up). It will confidently cite books that don't exist or give wrong historical dates. If your kid turns in a paper with AI hallucinations, they aren't just "cheating"—they're turning in bad work.
- Verdict: A powerful co-pilot, but a terrible solo pilot.

Elementary (Ages 5-10)
At this age, they shouldn't really be using generative AI for schoolwork. They need to learn the "analog" way first—how to form a sentence, how to add fractions, how to research. If they use Google or PBS Kids, that's plenty. AI at this age should be for play, like asking an AI to "tell me a story about a cat in space."
Middle School (Ages 11-13)

- The Move: Sit with them while they use it. Show them how to ask, "Why is this the answer?" rather than "What is the answer?"
High School (Ages 14-18)

- The Rule: Keep receipts. If they use AI to brainstorm an outline, they should save that chat log. If they write a paper in Google Docs, they should keep the version history to prove they actually typed the words themselves.
You need to explain to your kid that ChatGPT is not a "fact machine." It is a "probability machine." It predicts the next most likely word in a sentence. It doesn't actually know things.
I’ve seen kids turn in papers about historical events that never happened because they trusted an AI. Tell your kids: AI is a confident bullshitter. If they use it for facts, they have to double-check those facts on a reputable website or in a book.
Instead of a lecture on "honor," try the "Front Page Test."
Ask your child: "If your teacher saw your entire interaction with this AI—every prompt you typed and every response you got—would they be impressed with your process, or would they think you're trying to hide something?"
If they wouldn't want to show the teacher the chat log, they are probably crossing the line.

We can't ban AI any more than our parents could ban the graphing calculator. It is a foundational shift in how humans work. Our job isn't to be the "AI Police"—it's to be the "Integrity Coach."
We want our kids to be "AI Fluent," meaning they know how to use these tools to enhance their own intelligence, not replace it.
